ESL students (3. 1 at the time) completed the Woodcock- Munoz pre- test. It was found that all of the students, regardless of their English proficiency level (Intermediate, Advanced, etc.) scored at a significantly low level for being able to recognize picture vocabulary. This indicated knowledge of a minimal amount of academic vocabulary words, and sparse knowledge of vocabulary needed to describe everyday items. In response, the ESL department created a new vocabulary class for Intermediate level ESL students with the aim of aiding students in their daily life at Luther, and promoting proficient language skills. Since writing is an area where our ESL students struggle, and since students who attend Luther must do a lot of writing in their humanities classes, we have expanded the Advanced level ESL class to include two extra classes per week so that we can spend more time on writing. This extra time will be dedicated to honing the necessary writing skills that the students need to be successful in their humanities classes. It is our hope that when our ESL students pass from the Advanced level of ESL that they will feel confident about their writing skills and ready for a new challenge in their humanities classes. Students will not be permitted to study other humanities classes at this level. This program is for students ready to participate more fully in the academic program at Luther with considerations for their level of English comprehension. Students will receive tutorial assistance for one class period every second school day.
